Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department celebrated International Biodiversity Day 2025 across various Forest divisions and ranges of North Kashmir with unparalleled enthusiasm, marking a significant step forward in community-led conservation efforts. Under the overarching theme of “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development,” various Forest Divisions across the region, including JV Division , Kamraj , Kehmil and Langate and other Ranges like Uri, Naihari, South Lolab organized a series of impactful events aimed at raising awareness and fostering a deeper appreciation for the rich biodiversity of the Kashmir Valley.
The day’s events commenced with meetings of the Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) across all participating Forest Divisions. These meetings, held in a highly participatory spirit, saw active engagement from local self-government representatives, forest officials, environmental experts, and community leaders. Discussions focused on strengthening the implementation of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, and ensuring the effective documentation of local biodiversity through People’s Biodiversity Registers (PBRs). Strategies for sustainable utilization of bio-resources and equitable benefit-sharing mechanisms were also deliberated upon.
The public were made aware of the significance of biodiversity, the threats it faces from human activities like habitat degradation and climate change, and their crucial role in its conservation. Emphasis was placed on the unique floral and faunal diversity of North Kashmir, including its alpine meadows, coniferous forests, and freshwater ecosystems.
Irfan Ali Shah(IFS), Conservator of Forests North Forest Circle informed that “The overwhelming participation and positive response from the community, especially our young students, is truly heartening. International Biodiversity Day is not just a ceremonial observance; it’s a call to action. By involving our Biodiversity Management Committees, our schools, and every stakeholder, we are building a strong foundation for a sustainable future where humans and nature can thrive in harmony.
He said “we have successfully implemented the Non Timber Forest Policy in North Kashmir leading to livelihood generation and improving the socioeconomic condition of the people especially of people living in Forest fringe areas. He said Forest Department is committed to work hand in hand with every citizen to achieve ecological stability and economic improvement of people in North Kashmir “
