Baramulla, Jan 15: An accidental misfire from a 12 bore rifle of a security guard occurred inside the State Bank of India Baramulla Branch on Thursday, leaving a woman injured, officials said.
According to initial information, the rifle of the on-duty security guard went off unexpectedly within the bank premises, resulting in injuries to a Special Police Officer identified as Mehmooda Begum. The bullet reportedly grazed her ear, causing bleeding and immediate distress.
Colleagues and bank staff rushed to assist the injured woman, following which she was shifted to the Government Medical College Baramulla for specialised medical treatment. Hospital sources said she was conscious at the time of admission, though her condition was being closely monitored.
The incident created panic among bank staff and customers present at the branch at the time. Security personnel secured the area soon after the misfire to prevent any further risk.
Officials said the exact circumstances that led to the accidental discharge are being ascertained. A preliminary inquiry has been initiated to determine whether there was any lapse in weapon handling or safety protocol. [KNT]
