Army Chief General Apinder Dwivedi and Ambassador P. Harish Discuss India’s Role in UN Peacekeeping Missions

New Delhi, 25 December: Army Chief General Apinder Dwivedi discussed the role of the Indian Army in United Nations peacekeeping missions with India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador P. Harish, in New York. On Wednesday, General Dwivedi and Ambassador Harish also deliberated on military and diplomatic efforts for maintaining peace and addressing geopolitical dynamics in South Asia.

In early October, General Dwivedi addressed the Chiefs’ Conclave of UN troop-contributing countries in New Delhi, highlighting active global challenges to peace involving 19 countries. Expressing concern over the global order, General Dwivedi noted that shifts in power are undermining consensus at the UN, resulting in a lack of coordinated action.

“Today, the protection of peace faces unprecedented scale and complexity of challenges. The global order is at an inflection point, involving more than 56 active conflicts and participation from around 19 countries,” he said.

He emphasized the disruptive impact of hybrid warfare, emerging technologies, and the growing influence of non-state actors, urging coordinated responses from UN peacekeepers.

“The combination of destructive technologies, the rising influence of non-state actors, hybrid warfare, and the scourge of misinformation has blurred traditional conflict boundaries. Shifts in geopolitical currents have weakened the spirit of consensus that drives UN coordinated action. Such realities demand collaborative responses, and those working for peace and stability can only succeed by working together.”
