Srinagar, Jan 5: In view of recurring adverse weather conditions in the higher reaches, authorities on Monday reiterated a series of mandatory advisories regulating vehicular movement on the Tangmarg to Gulmarg road, emphasising that strict adherence is crucial for public safety.
Officials said that every vehicle moving from Tangmarg towards Gulmarg must carry a pair of anti-skid chains. The requirement applies to all categories of vehicles, including four-wheel-drive and 4×4 vehicles, which are also required to use anti-skid chains during snowfall, icy conditions, or any other adverse weather situation.
Drivers who do not have prior experience of driving on snow-covered, icy, or mountainous roads have been strongly advised to avoid travelling on this stretch, particularly during periods of poor weather.
Authorities cautioned that inexperience significantly raises the risk of skidding, accidents, and traffic disruptions on the steep and narrow road leading to Gulmarg.
The advisory further states that hatchback cars and sedans should preferably be avoided on the route, especially during adverse weather conditions, due to their lower ground clearance and limited traction on snow-laden surfaces.
In addition, movement of two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and heavy vehicles with a seating capacity exceeding ten passengers has been completely prohibited on the Tangmarg–Gulmarg road until further orders. Officials said the restriction has been imposed to minimise risks and ensure smoother regulation of traffic during winter conditions.
Authorities have appealed to locals, tourists, and transport operators to cooperate with the enforcement teams deployed along the road, stressing that the measures are aimed solely at safeguarding life and property.[KNT]
