Dhaka, Aug 10: Bangladeshi Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan has tendered his resignation to the Ministry of Law amid pressure by student protesters, Bangladeshi media reported on Saturday.

The move comes after a protest leader issued an ultimatum demanding that Hassan step down, the Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported. President Mohammad Shahabuddin is expected to take action on his resignation.

Five Justices of the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division were reportedly going to resign alongside Chief Justice Hassan.

Protests began across Bangladesh after the announcement of a multi-day “non-cooperation action” with the authorities by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on Sunday. Clashes between students, police, and government supporters escalated into riots. Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned amid the unrest.

On Monday, news outlets reported that Hasina and her sister had left the official residence in Dhaka and fled to India, which was confirmed by Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

On Thursday, Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist and banker Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the country’s interim prime minister.
