Srinagar, Dec 29: Flight operations at Srinagar International Airport resumed on Sunday after an improvement in weather conditions and visibility, officials said.

Earlier in the day, dense fog and low visibility had disrupted flights, causing delays and cancellations.

“The flight operations have resumed”, Director Srinagar International Airport Javed Anjum told UNI.

“Our Runway Visual Range (RVR) was okay but visibility was below 400 meters with dense milky fog that forced us to divert four flights in the morning. Among the two returned and two were cancelled, he added.

He said there are about 23 scheduled additional flights today and the operation will normally run and will fly to Srinagar. One additional Air India flight will fly during the evening time also.

“Amid Sunday today, the Air force has allowed us to continue flight operation till 7 pm in the evening today which will allow us to fly a major assignment of standard passengers today”, he added.

He said seven flights were cancelled on December 27 and 37 flights were cancelled on Saturday due to snowfall and bad weather conditions.

Earlier in the morning amid dense fog and low visibility the flight operations at the Srinagar International Airport were affected on Sunday.

However, the train services and traffic on Srinagar-Jammu national highway has resumed today after heavy snowfall disconnected the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country on Saturday.

“The dense fog at the Srinagar International Airport reduced the visibility and forced some incoming flights to divert while just one flight from Delhi could manage to land at the airport this morning”, Director Srinagar International Airport Javed Anjum told UNI.

He said “we are hopeful that the visibility will improve and the normal flight operation will resume during the day”.

On Saturday the heavy snowfall led to the cancellation of all flights from the Srinagar International airport.

The Rail service which also remained suspended on Saturday due to heavy snowfall in Kashmir valley was resumed today, a Railway official said.

“The trains will chug on the tracks with a minimum speed amid snow accumulation and are likely to delay”, he said.

Meanwhile, traffic on the strategic Srinagar-Jammu national highway has been resumed after remaining suspended for the past two days due to snowfall.

“Passenger traffic plying on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway on both sides”, a traffic police official said.

He said the commuters have been advised to follow the lane discipline as the road between Banihal and Qazigund is slippery due to snowfall, a traffic police official said.

“Mughal Road connecting Shopian district of south Kashmir with the twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu division, Sinthan Road connecting south Kashmir, Sonamarg-Kargil Road connecting Ladakh and Bhaderwah-Chamba Road remain closed due to snow accumulation,” they added.
