Srinagar, Jun 08: The highly-anticipated Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir could soon be a reality as the Election Commission of India on Saturday notified the start of process to accept applications for allotment of election symbols with an immediate effect.
“The Commission has decided to accept applications seeking allotment of Common Symbol under Para 10B of the Election Symbols (Reservation & Allotment) Order 1968 for the General Election to the Legislative Assembly of Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir with immediate effect,” reads a press statement, as per GNS.
The notification follows after the successful culmination of the Lok Sabha elections – which as per ECI statistics saw the highest voter turnout in over a three-decade period.
Notably, the Apex Court while adjudicating the matter pertaining to Article 370 and allied developments post August 4, 2019, had in December 2023 directed the poll-body to hold assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir by September 30, 2024. (GNS)
