Judicial custody for Kejriwal till July 12

New Delhi, Jun 29 : A Delhi Court Saturday remanded Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to judicial custody till July 12 in a CBI case related to alleged liquor policy scam after briefly allowing the CM to meet his family in court.

The AAP National Convenor was produced before the Rouse Avenue Court after his three-day CBI remand in the excise policy case ended.

CBI then sought judicial custody for Arvind Kejriwal.

Vacation Judge Sunena Sharma after hearing arguments of Senior Advocate Vikram Chaudhari who appeared for Kejriwal through Video Conferencing and opposed the JC saying that there is no need for the court to grant judicial remand as Kejriwal as the police custody was granted and the permission to arrest was granted. It was based on two aspects.

Chaudhari contended that this is an investigation going on since August 2022. “The Delhi CM was arrested by ED on March 21. He was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court for three weeks on May 10.

“It was urged last time that they had collected some evidence against me in January and they got sanction under PC Act in April,” Chaudhary said.

The special judge assured Chaudhry that court will definitely look into the material being presented by the CBI and then take a decision on the main allegations. But for now, as the police custody expires today, the court has no option but to remand accused to Judicial Custody, the judge said.

“The accused can move an application for bail according to the procedure. There is no provision that the court should reject the investigating officer’s application to remand the accused to judicial custody.”

Meanwhile, Kejriwal’s counsel said, “The accused’s wife and family are here if the accused can be permitted to meet till your lordships pass an order.”

The Court allowed Kejriwal to meet his wife and family members in the courtroom.

Court then reserved its order for a brief period thereafter it pronounced its order of granting 14 days of Judicial Custody (JC) to Kejriwal till July 12.
