Modi’s Unparalleled Arab Diplomacy — India’s Changing Relations in the Gulf Region

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Jordan, Oman, and Ethiopia was not merely a diplomatic tour; it symbolized a changing reality in which India is emerging as a central, reliable, and influential partner in the Gulf and Arab world. There was a time when it was widely believed that Modi’s rise to power would lead to a cooling of India’s relations with the Arab world, but ground realities have decisively disproved this assumption.

The warm reception accorded to Prime Minister Modi by King Abdullah II of Jordan went far beyond diplomatic protocol. At the India–Jordan Business Forum, King Abdullah openly praised India’s economic growth and Modi’s leadership, and presented the vision of a potential economic corridor linking South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. This statement was clear evidence that Arab leadership today views India not merely as a regional power but as a global economic force.

During the visit, the Jordanian Crown Prince personally accompanying Prime Minister Modi to a museum and then seeing him off at the airport were gestures that went far beyond formal protocol, reflecting deep trust, respect, and strong personal ties. In global politics, symbols carry great significance, and these gestures spoke volumes.

The target of expanding bilateral trade between India and Jordan to five billion dollars within five years, along with cooperation in culture, renewable energy, water management, and digital infrastructure, underscores the fact that India now believes not just in statements but in practical partnerships.

In Oman, Prime Minister Modi being conferred the “Order of Oman,” the country’s highest national honor, was not merely a ceremonial gesture. It was recognition of India’s growing global stature. The fact that five of the six Gulf Cooperation Council countries have already awarded their highest national honors to Modi highlights how exceptionally strong India’s position has become in the Arab world.

The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement between India and Oman marks a historic development. It is only Oman’s second major trade agreement in nearly two decades, the first being with the United States. This decision reflects the confidence Oman places in India’s economy, market, and future potential.

Under this agreement, Indian exports will gain near-complete duty-free access, while new avenues will open for employment, MSMEs, women-led enterprises, and skilled professionals. This is not merely a trade agreement but a major success of India’s economic diplomacy.

Indeed, Narendra Modi’s diplomacy in the Arab world has given rise to a new reality: India is no longer confined to any bloc or ideological framework but has emerged as an independent, pragmatic, and trust-based global partner. The respect extended by Arab countries is a sign that India is now viewed as a nation that builds relationships on the foundations of stability, development, and mutual benefit.

This visit sends a clear message that India’s foreign policy is not reactive but is moving forward with a clear vision, long-term strategy, and the confidence of global leadership. (MNN)
