PM Modi visits iconic mosque in Brunei capital

Bandar Seri Begawan/New Delhi, Sep 3 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday evening visited the iconic Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in the Brunei capital.

He was received by Brunei’s Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Dato Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin, and spent some time sitting quietly in the premises. The PM was accompanied by EAM S Jaishankar and NSA Ajit Doval.

The MEA spokesperson in a post on X said:

“PM @narendramodi visited the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque where he was received by Brunei’s Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Dato Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin.”

Brunei’s Minister of Health Haji Mohammad Isham was also in attendance. A gathering of Indian community members was also present to greet the Prime Minister, a statement said.

The mosque is named after Omar Ali Saifuddien III, the 28th Sultan of Brunei (father of the current Sultan, who also initiated its construction), and was completed in 1958.

Earlier, the PM inaugurated the new Chancery premises of the Indian High Commission in the Brunei capital. He arrived in Bandar Seri Begawan earlier in the day on a two-day official visit. On Wednesday, the PM will hold bilateral talks with the Brunei Sultan.
