Srinagar, Jan 24 : The Srinagar administration has launched a crackdown on unqualified practitioners following reports of acute liver failure (ALF) cases among children.
Officials said that one such unauthorized ‘clinic’ located on the outskirts of Srinagar was sealed, and samples were collected for investigation.
Authorities have assured further action against others involved in similar activities.
The action came after the Principal of Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar, flagged the issue in a letter to the District Magistrate. The GMC principal’s letter was prompted by an urgent appeal from the Pediatrics Department, which raised alarms about children falling victim to unproven “miracle cures” for jaundice.
According to the letter, several cases of acute liver failure were reported by the department. These involved children who were discharged from GMC Srinagar after initial treatment, only to visit a location in Dara Harwan offering dubious “miracle cures.” The unverified therapies provided there reportedly caused severe complications, leading to ICU admissions and fatalities.
The pediatricians urged immediate and strong action against such quacks, emphasizing the grave danger their so-called treatments pose to children.
Responding to the GMC principal’s request, the Srinagar District Magistrate took swift action on Thursday by sealing the clinic in question. Officials have pledged to intensify efforts to identify and shut down similar illegal operations to ensure public safety.
