Says 31 terrorists killed in 2025, local recruitment nearly zero,                          active militants down to single digits as security situation remains sensitive but firmly under control

New Delhi, Jan 13: The security situation along the western front and in Jammu and Kashmir remains sensitive but firmly under control, with terrorism on a sharp decline and local recruitment nearly negligible, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi said on Monday. Addressing a press conference in the national capital, the Army Chief said that since May 10 the overall security environment has been effectively managed, backed by coordinated action among security agencies and support from civil authorities.

“In 2025, a total of 31 terrorists were eliminated, of which 65 per cent were of Pakistani origin,” General Dwivedi said. He added that the three terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack were neutralised during Operation Mahadev.

The Army Chief said the number of active local terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir has come down to single digits, while terrorist recruitment is “almost non-existent,” with only two cases reported in 2025.

“These are clear indicators of a positive change in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said, pointing to ongoing development activities, revival of tourism and the peaceful conduct of the Sri Amarnath Yatra.

General Dwivedi said the annual pilgrimage witnessed participation of over four lakh devotees this year, exceeding the five-year average. “The transition from terrorism to tourism is gradually taking shape,” he said.

Referring to ongoing military operations, the Army Chief said Operation Sindoor was an example of effective tri-service coordination. “Operation Sindoor was the best example of tri-service synergy under a clear political directive and full freedom to act or respond,” he said.He said the operation remains ongoing and warned that any future misadventure would be dealt with firmly. “A future misadventure will be resolutely responded to,” he said. General Dwivedi also acknowledged the role of multiple stakeholders in maintaining security and stability.

He said coordination among the armed forces, Central Armed Police Forces, intelligence agencies, state administration and civic bodies has been crucial. “I must acknowledge the proactive role of all stakeholders at the national level, including CAPFs, intelligence agencies, civic bodies, the state administration and ministries such as the Ministry of Home Affairs and Railways,” he said.

The Army Chief said sustained coordination and vigilance would continue to remain key to maintaining peace and security in the region.(KNS).
