Cairo, Aug 29 : Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani said on Thursday that Qatar and Egypt remain committed to ending the war in Gaza despite “illusions and disruptive attempts.”
Speaking at a joint press conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty in New Alamein City on Egypt’s north coast, Al-Thani said the two countries were determined to stop what he called “genocide against the people in Gaza.”
“The current situation is unfortunate and shameful, as it has been ongoing for months without any serious action from the international community,” he said.
He added that joint efforts by Qatar and Egypt, coordinated with the United States, had been ignored by Israel despite days of intensive contacts aimed at reaching common ground for a ceasefire and the release of hostages and prisoners.
Talks have stalled after Israel failed to formally respond to a proposal mediated by Qatar and Egypt that Hamas endorsed last week.
Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s rejection of any attempt to displace Palestinians, saying Cairo has been in continuous talks with European partners to press Israel to take steps to prevent “famine and mass killings” in Gaza.
“There is no room for retreat. Efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza will continue. We will maintain talks with the U.S. and Israeli sides through different channels,” he said.
