Jammu, Feb 13 : The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Friday condoled the demise of senior National Conference leader and former Minister Qamar Ali Akhoon, with members describing his passing as an irreparable loss to public life.
As per news agency JKNS, the Speaker informed the House about the sad demise of the veteran leader from Kargil, saying that Akhoon had devoted decades of his life to public service and democratic politics.
Akhoon had served as a Minister for six years and earlier began his political journey at the grassroots level, where he was elected unopposed as a councillor. Members recalled that he remained deeply connected with the people and consistently worked for development in remote and high-altitude areas of Kargil.
He was re-elected as MLA in the 2008 Assembly elections and subsequently served as a Minister in the Omar Abdullah-led government, where he represented the aspirations of the Ladakh region in the Cabinet.
Several legislators cutting across party lines shared their memories of the departed leader, stating that he played a vital role in voicing public concerns and strengthening democratic institutions in the region.
Describing him as a seasoned politician and a respected figure in the House, members said his demise has created a void that will be difficult to fill.
The Assembly observed silence as a mark of respect and extended condolences to the bereaved family, praying for peace to the departed soul. (JKNS)
