New Delhi, March 11: External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar held a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi to discuss escalating regional tensions, maritime security concerns, and ongoing bilateral cooperation between New Delhi and Tehran.
During the call, the two ministers exchanged views on the impact of the conflict on maritime security and shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor.
Araghchi reiterated Tehran’s position that Iran remains committed to maintaining the safety of shipping routes in the Persian Gulf, while attributing recent instability to what he described as destabilizing actions by the United States.
Araghchi also briefed his Indian counterpart on recent tensions involving the United States and Israel, outlining what he described as attacks against Iranian territory and civilians over the past 11 days.
In this telephone conversation, Iran’s Foreign Minister detailed the crimes committed by the United States and the Israeli regime against the Iranian nation over the past 11 days, including the “missile attack on a girls’ elementary school in Minab on the first day of the war and subsequent widespread attacks on civilian sites and public service centers.” He emphasised Iran’s determination to “comprehensively defend the integrity of Iran.”
The Iranian foreign minister emphasised Tehran’s determination to defend the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He described the “aggressive actions” by the United States and Israel as “violations of the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law, and said governments around the world have a responsibility to condemn what he called military aggression and breaches of international norms.”
The foreign ministers of Iran and India also discussed the consequences of the US and Israeli “military aggression” on the security of shipping and vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Referring to Iran’s principled approach to safeguarding shipping security in the Persian Gulf, Iran’s Foreign Minister reminded that the insecure situation and problems arising for shipping in the Persian Gulf are a result of the aggressive and destabilizing actions of the United States, and the international community must hold the US accountable for this situation.
The Indian Foreign Minister, while emphasising the importance of continuing and enhancing bilateral relations between Tehran and New Delhi, stressed the necessity of ongoing consultations to help restore stability to the region.UNI
