Srinagar, Feb 5: The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was opened for traffic on Thursday with restrictions in place, allowing the movement of light motor vehicles while imposing regulated movement for heavy vehicles, officials said.
According to traffic authorities, light motor vehicles were permitted to ply on the highway from both directions. However, heavy motor vehicles were allowed to move only from Srinagar towards Jammu. No heavy vehicles were permitted to travel from Jammu to Srinagar on the day.
Police officials said the restrictions were imposed to ensure smooth regulation of traffic and to prevent congestion on vulnerable stretches of the highway, particularly in view of prevailing road and weather conditions.
Drivers were strictly advised to follow lane discipline and avoid overtaking at any point during their journey. Authorities cautioned that any violation of traffic advisories, including overtaking or reckless driving, would invite strict legal action.
Traffic police personnel have been deployed at key locations along the highway to monitor vehicle movement and ensure compliance with instructions. Officials urged commuters and transporters to cooperate with on-ground staff and adhere to the issued advisories for their own safety and the safety of others.
Locals planning to travel were advised to stay updated with official traffic bulletins before commencing their journey and to drive cautiously while passing through mountainous and sensitive sections of the highway. [KNT]
