London, April 21:As the first anniversary of the Pahalgam terror attack is set to be observed tomorrow, human rights activist Arif Aajkia expressed strong views on terrorism, Pakistan’s role, and the international response.
Speaking ahead of the anniversary, Aajkia alleged that Pakistan is “continuously targeting India, assuming that India will not respond.” Referring to the nature of the attack, he described it as “a horrific act of terrorism carried out in the name of religion,” claiming that victims were identified based on their faith.
Highlighting India’s response over the past year, he said, “India has sent a clear message that we will not tolerate terrorism anymore. The entire year passed without a major terror incident.” Referring to Operation Sindoor, he added that it has not been permanently halted but is currently paused, warning that it could resume if tensions escalate.
Rejecting Pakistan’s claims of taking action against terrorist groups, Aajkia stated that “the very groups Pakistan speaks about were created by Pakistan itself.” Referring to Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, he remarked that it was a creation of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). He further alleged that major Taliban leaders were sheltered under ISI protection in Pakistan.
Explaining the consequences of such policies, Aajkia said, “If you raise snakes, don’t expect them to bite only your neighbors—they can bite you as well,” suggesting that internal divisions eventually turned these groups against Pakistan itself.
Addressing the international response, Aajkia made sharp remarks on global geopolitics. He claimed Pakistan was created and maintained as a buffer zone due to its strategic importance. He further argued that Pakistan is not supported but “used” by the United States, particularly due to its proximity to Afghanistan and Iran.
Aajkia concluded that despite ongoing concerns over terrorism, geopolitical considerations often limit international pressure on Pakistan, and stronger global action may be necessary to effectively address the issue.
