Links unemployment to rising drug abuse; urges political participation, accountability in governance and justice system reforms
Doda, Apr 28 : -Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Doda, Mehraj Malik, on Tuesday urged educated citizens to actively participate in politics, stating that their involvement is crucial for bringing meaningful change in society and addressing public issues.
Speaking to reporters after his release, as per news agency Mehraj Malik said that educated individuals or “intelligentsia” have the ability to transform governance and should come forward to strengthen the democratic process.
“Educated citizens must step out of their homes and join politics. Their participation is essential for shaping the future of our youth,” he said.
Linking the issue of drug abuse to unemployment, the MLA said that rising joblessness has contributed significantly to increasing substance abuse among young people. He stressed the need for policy-driven efforts to address unemployment as a root cause.
Mehraj Malik also criticized the functioning of the current political system, stating that there is a lack of clear policy direction. He expressed concern that many individuals who enter politics with the intention of public service often become disillusioned.
He further raised concerns over the justice system, claiming that several individuals are lodged in jails without proper awareness of their court hearing dates, while families struggle to meet them, highlighting issues of transparency and access.
“Common people who enter politics face a different reality where efforts for change are often resisted,” he said, adding that citizens must collectively raise their voice for public rights.
Calling for accountability and sincerity in public life, Mehraj Malik said, “Life is short. We must deliver honestly, raise the voice of the people, and stand for the poor.” (KNC)
